Tentoonstelling: De Collectie

Voor het eerst toont het M HKA een permanente basiscollectie met referentiekunstenaars, de hedendaagse helden, de historische trekkers en smaakmakers uit de wereldwijde collectie van het museum. De collectietentoonstelling is gratis te bezoeken op de gelijkvloerse verdieping. Ook elders in het museum zijn permanent geïnstalleerde collectiewerken te zien.
Deze werken zijn gekozen uit de M HKA-collectie die momenteel uit ongeveer 5000 werken bestaat. De ruggengraat ervan zijn eigen aankopen en werken die door de Vlaamse Gemeenschap zijn verworven. Daarnaast zijn er schenkingen en enkele andere publieke fondsen die het M HKA ontsluit. Het collectieverhaal vertrekt van de naoorlogse avant-garde in Antwerpen en Vlaanderen, en gebruikt dit verleden als uitgangspunt om de multipolaire wereld van vandaag en van de toekomst te begrijpen.
De M HKA-collectie ontwikkelt zich rond drie manieren om kunst te benaderen: beeld, actie en maatschappij. Hoewel geen enkel werk uitsluitend onder een van deze noemers valt, zijn het nuttige insteken om de eigenheid en de complementariteit van onze collectie te onderzoeken. Beeld, actie en maatschappij kunnen de drie assen zijn die samen de ruimte van een werk bepalen: elk performatief kunstwerk heeft een beeldkwaliteit, kijken is actie en elk kunstwerk verhoudt zich tot de maatschappij. Deze opdeling wil dan ook vooral een aanzet vormen voor het publiek om in interactie te gaan met de werken en nieuwe verbanden te leggen.
De collectietentoonstelling toont werk van Marina Abramović & Ulay, Dirk Braeckman, James Lee Byars, Thierry De Cordier, Raoul De Keyser, Lili Dujourie, Marlene Dumas, Jimmie Durham, Jan Fabre, Dan Flavin, Jef Geys, Jan Henderikse, Ilya & Emilia Kabakov, Gordon Matta-Clark, Almagul Menlibayeva, Otobong Nkanga, Cady Noland, Panamarenko, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Cindy Sherman, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, Luc Tuymans en Jan Vercruysse.
