Tentoonstelling: SHILPA GUPTA – Vandaag zal eindigen

Shilpa Gupta maakt kunstwerken die menselijke relaties, subjectiviteit en perceptie onderzoeken aan de hand van thema's zoals verlangen, conflict, veiligheid, technologie, grenzen en censuur. Haar werk is veelzijdig en vaak interactief. Ze maakt gebruik van media als beeldhouwkunst, installatie, tekst en fotografie, waarbij ze vaak blijk geeft van een meesterlijke beheersing van audio- en visuele technologieën. Gupta beschouwt technologie als een verlengstuk van het lichaam en de geest en heeft een sterk politiek besef omtrent de rol, de psychologie en de esthetiek van verschillende mediavormen, vooral wat hun medeplichtigheid aan de productie van angst betreft. Hoewel haar werken als verwijzend naar de sociale of politieke situatie van specifieke culturele of nationale contexten zouden kunnen worden begrepen, houdt Gupta ze nadrukkelijk open, zodat hun thema's ongeacht de plaats en het tijdstip waarop ze worden tentoongesteld op verschillende manieren kunnen worden geïnterpreteerd.
Het M HKA presenteert de eerste tussentijdse overzichtstentoonstelling van werken van Gupta, waarin vele van haar belangrijkste werken voor het eerst worden samengebracht. De tentoonstelling biedt een overzicht van de praktijk die Gupta – als één van de toonaangevende kunstenaars die sinds de jaren negentig in de hedendaagse kunstscène van Mumbai zijn opgekomen – gedurende meer dan twintig jaar heeft ontwikkeld. Ze belicht de evolutie van haar werk gedurende deze periode, met speciale aandacht voor het speculatieve karakter van haar praktijk en de diepgang van haar kritische betrokkenheid op het gebied van psychologie, gedrag, politiek en taal. In 2014 werden werken van Gupta ook opgenomen in Don't You Know Who I Am? - Art After Identity Politics, een belangrijke onderzoekstentoonstelling in de recente geschiedenis van het M HKA die een nieuwe lezing van de hedendaagse kunst wil definiëren waarin vragen over menselijke diversiteit in relatie tot nieuwe esthetische en filosofische dimensies worden beschouwd. Samen met de recente aankoop van haar omvangrijke installatie Threat (2008-09) voor de collectie van het museum, wil deze overzichtstentoonstelling Gupta bevestigen als een belangrijke referentie voor het M HKA.
Shilpa Gupta woont en werkt in Mumbai, India. Zij studeerde beeldhouwkunst aan de Sir J. J. School of Fine Arts van 1992 tot 1997. Ze had solotentoonstellingen in onder meer het Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, USA; Arnolfini, Bristol, GB; het OK Centrum, Linz, Oostenrijk; La synagogue de Delme, Delme, Frankrijk; en de Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, India. Ze presenteerde een soloproject als onderdeel van My East is Your West, een gezamenlijke Indiaas-Pakistaanse duo-tentoonstelling georganiseerd door de Gujral Foundation in Venetië in 2015. Gupta nam ook deel aan de 58e Biënnale van Venetië (2019), de Kochi Muziris Biënnale (2018), de Biënnale van Berlijn (2014), de New Museum Triënnale (2009), de Sharjah Biënnale (2013), de Biënnale van Lyon (2009), de Gwangju Biënnale (2008), de Yokohama Triënnale (2008) en de Biënnale van Liverpool (2006). Zij was ook te zien op tweejaarlijkse tentoonstellingen in onder meer Auckland, Brisbane, Seoul, Havana, Sydney en Yogyakarta. In 2017 nam ze deel aan de door Nav Haq gecureerde Biënnale van Göteborg, waarvan de titel was ontleend aan haar tekstueel werk WheredoIendandyoubegin.
De tentoonstelling wordt gecureerd door Nav Haq, Associate Director van het M HKA.
