Philippe Van Snick (1946 - 2019) maakt werk dat wordt gekenmerkt door een uiterst eenvoudige, aan het minimalisme verwante vormentaal en het herhaaldelijke gebruik van steeds dezelfde kleuren: soms enkel blauw en zwart, symbool van dag en nacht. Sinds 1980 gebruikt hij systematisch zijn eigen tiendelige kleurenpalet met de hoofdkleuren rood, geel en blauw, de secundaire kleuren oranje, groen en paars, met de ‘niet-kleuren’ wit en zwart die staan voor het immateriële en met goud en zilver als kleuren die verwijzen naar materialisme en materiële rijkdom, maar in het voetspoor van de occulte alchemische traditie ook als 'inerte' of 'pure' metalen kunnen worden geïnterpreteerd. Daarnaast staan ze spreekwoordelijk voor 'zwijgen' (goud) en 'spreken' (zilver). Voor Van Snick hebben kleuren dus zowel een mentale als een fysieke betekenis.
Zijn werken zijn nauw verbonden met zowel de abstracte notie van ruimte op zich als met de fysieke ervaring van de kijker in een concrete ruimte. Van Snick maakt gebruik van een eenvoudig en afgebakend visueel vocabularium dat onder meer bestaat uit conceptuele fotografie, wiskunde, fragiele sculpturen. Naast zijn tien vaste kleuren en andere decimale systemen zijn ook bipolaire fundamentele krachten een belangrijk aspect in het hele oeuvre, bijvoorbeeld de tegenstelling tussen licht en donker, orde en chaos, kleur en het ontbreken van kleur, evenals het gladde en het ruwe.
