Kerry James Marshall est généralement considéré comme l’un des plus grands peintres de sa génération. Son œuvre aujourd’hui substantielle présente son point de vue sur la complexité de la condition des Afro-Américains et sur les problématiques persistantes de politique raciale, de représentation culturelle et d’émancipation sociale dont elle est indissociable. Il aborde aussi l’histoire de l’art et s’efforce de remplir ce qu’il décrit comme le « vide dans la banque d’images », tout en soulevant des questions pertinentes sur le maintien du système de l’art et les thèmes inhérents de légitimation, de pouvoir et de marginalisation.
