The film How Much I Love You, originally produced for Algerian state television, is a painfully ironic depiction of the French colonialisation of Algeria. Through an ingenious mixture of the genres of educational film, propaganda and documentary, and with a distressingly joyous soundtrack, the film uses the colonial film archives to chronicle the Algerian war of independence from the ‘mother country’. It exposes the political and economic self-interests of the French administration and caricatures its narratives in a darkly sarcastic indictment of colonialisation and its effects.
