Depicting a surrealistic surrounding that features nothing but a bed and a TV in the vast steppe, Nomad is a metaphor for the precarious existence of the sedentary ‘nomads’. It was initially exhibited alongside the photographic series Self-Listing (2012) as an in-situ installation for a small hostel in the suburbs of Astana. The action was conceived as an attempt to call attention to the fate of the evictees. Having lived himself in similar conditions at that time, the artist expresses his personal experience through the collective one, while addressing a wider problematic of the adaptation of Kazakh society to urbanist conditions.
