“Gentleness generates gentleness” was the motto of José Datrino, or Profeta Gentileza.
In 1980 he started making his wall writings on 56 columns under the Gasômetro viaduct, covering an extension of 1,5 km and an area of 350 m².
Gentileza’s panels had very specific characteristics concerning his language use as well as his symbology, graphical codes and nationalistic colours.
In August 1997, an equivocated action of Rio’s cleaning services against graffiti covered great part of Gentileza’s writings with a layer of grey paint. The restoration of the work started in 1999 and ended in May 2000. In 2010, the wall writings have been through a new restoration process.
