A Rua — De Straat — Europalia.Brasil
07 October 2011 - 22 January 2012

M HKA, Antwerpen

The exhibition A Rua (The Street) showed work by some 20 Brazilian artists whose lives and work were closely linked to the city of Rio de Janeiro.

The exhibition focused on the development of the art scene in Rio de Janeiro over the last four decades, with work of the late 60s and early 70s – the anni mirabiles of global conceptualism, in which Brazilian art played a prominent role - and the contemporary art movements. Besides these geographical and historical perspectives, A Rua, as the title clearly suggests, exposed the notion of the street, in particular the role and position of the street in contemporary art in Rio in all its variations. The street as a meeting place between people, between art and life, the street as experience space where the community renews itself every time; and alongside this, the street as a studio, stage, show location, the street as cultural production space, and finally the street as an arena and agora, the street as a public space.

With work by Alexandre Vogler, Anna Bella Geiger, Anna Maria Maiolino, Antonio Manuel, Artur Barrio, Arthur Omar, Cildo Meireles, Dias & Riedweg, Ernesto Neto, Evandro Teixeira, Gabriel & Thiago Primo, Guga Ferraz, Helio Oiticica, Ivens Machado, Joana Traub Csekö, Jorge Mario Jauregui, Laura Lima, Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape, Lucia Laguna, Marcio Botner, Miguel Rio Branco, Paula Trope, Ricardo Basbaum, Ronald Duarte, Rosana Palazyan, Simone Michelin and Waltercio Caldas

About M HKA / Mission Statement

The M HKA is a museum for contemporary art, film and visual culture in its widest sense. It is an open place of encounter for art, artists and the public. The M HKA aspires to play a leading role in Flanders and to extend its international profile by building upon Antwerp's avant-garde tradition. The M HKA bridges the relationship between artistic questions and wider societal issues, between the international and the regional, artists and public, tradition and innovation, reflection and presentation. Central here is the museum's collection with its ongoing acquisitions, as well as related areas of management and research.
