Alexander Lee made these ink rubbings of undatable petroglyphs in the Marquesas Islands, one of the five archipelagos of French Polynesia. The Marquesian name of the islands is Fenua Enata (‘The Land of People’). In the context of ‘A Temporary Futures Institute’ the series references pre-historical painting – and painting as Lee’s chosen medium for the exhibition – as well as the traditional Polynesian understanding of futures as something taking place behind us – because we are always facing our past.

Petroglyphs (Fenua Enata/Terre des Hommes), 2017, is produced with support from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Academy.
