James Brown is Dead (ARTERS* N° 148), 2016, is from a series of works using the acronym ARTERS, which stands for: achats à répétition, tentatives d'épuisement, reconstitutions de stocks (meaning: repetitive purchases, attempts to exhaust stocks, replenish stocks). The installation brings together two different collections, firstly of many copies of the 12” House record James Brown is Dead by the Dutch group LA Style from 1991, alongside which he displays a large collection of unemployment slips that would typically be given to unemployed Belgians. The works look to describe the psychological paradox of wanting to refuse to participate in the capitalist system, yet simultaneously desiring collectable objects.
