Tentoonstelling: EXTRA MUROS: Spirits of Internationalism

Spirits of Internationalism vond tegelijkertijd plaats in het Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven en in het M HKA. De tentoonstelling was een reflectie op de spanning die bestaat tussen de internationale en verschillende regionale en lokale kunstmilieus. Zij herwaardeerden de vaak ambigue verhouding van de Belgische/Vlaamse en Nederlandse kunstscene uit de jaren 60 en 70 tegenover de hegemonie van de internationale en gecanoniseerde kunst.
De getoonde kunstwerken kwamen uit zes Europese collecties, waaronder vier musea en twee kunstenaarsarchieven. Ze werden gecreëerd tussen 1956 en 1986, een periode van snelle economische en technologische ontwikkelingen, maar ook van gespannen internationale betrekkingen.
Spirits of Internationalism toonde hoe de realiteit van de Koude Oorlog de kunst beïnvloedde en een andere betekenis gaf aan de concepten ‘internationaal’ en ‘regionaal’. De tentoonstelling wilde het vereenvoudigde beeld van de ‘drie werelden’ doorbreken door bekende en minder bekende kunstwerken te tonen in verrassende constellaties. Er was werk te zien van internationaal gerenommeerde kunstenaars en van kunstenaars die erkenning verdienden buiten hun eigen regio.
Spirits of Internationalism was het laatste deel van een reeks tentoonstellingen georganiseerd door het Europese samenwerkingsproject De Internationale. De partners in dit project zijn het M HKA in Antwerpen, MACBA in Barcelona, Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, Moderna Galerija in Ljubljana, Július Koller Society in Bratislava en KwieKulik Archive in Warschau.
