In de periode tussen 1973 en 1979 wijdde Durham zich voltijds aan de American Indian Movement (AIM) en maakte hij geen kunst. Hij was directeur van de International Indian Treaty Council en VN-vertegenwoordiger. In 1980 verliet hij de AIM, raakte betrokken bij de New Yorkse kunstscene en begon opnieuw kunst te maken. Zijn kunst uit die periode zit vol verwijzingen naar de identiteit van de Amerikaanse indianen en wat nog belangrijker is: vaak is ze een reactie was op wat het publiek verwachtte van een native American kunstenaar. In 1985 had Jimmie Durham een tentoonstelling in het Alternative Museum in New York, getiteld A Matter of Life and Death and Singing. Twee jaar later verhuisde hij naar Cuernavaca in Mexico. 1987-1993 was een periode waarin hij wereldwijd op grote schaal tentoonstelde en performances uitvoerde, zoals op Documenta IX, in het M HKA in Antwerpen en het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten in Brussel. Hij schreef ook regelmatig essays en poëzie en publiceerde in 1988 een dichtbundel en in 1993 een verzameling essays getiteld A Certain Lack of Coherence.
