« Hugo Roelandt était un artiste qui a inspiré et collaboré avec de nombreuses personnes (et il s'est souvent disputé avec elles !), qui avait besoin d'amis comme d'ennemis, et qui a eu une influence importante sur la scène artistique, d'abord à Alost, puis à Anvers et en Belgique, et plus tard parmi ses étudiants à l'Académie royale. Il n'est donc pas surprenant que la collaboration soit au cœur de son travail. Pour chacune de ses performances, installations, expositions et vidéos, il invitait des amis, des connaissances, des étudiants et/ou d'anciens étudiants, des artistes, des scientifiques, des techniciens et/ou des musiciens à participer.
À l'origine, les noms de tous les participants étaient mentionnés sur les invitations et les affiches. Cela n'a pas posé de problème jusqu'à ce que Roelandt, Jan Hermans, Bob Van Aert, Greet Verlinden et moi-même participions à l'Automobiënnale 1985 au Middelheim. À l'époque, l'administration du Middelheim n'était pas vraiment familiarisée avec les projets artistiques « collectifs » et exigeait un nom plus court pour l'inscrire sur la plaque traditionnelle placée à côté de chaque œuvre d'art. C'est ainsi qu'est né le nom 'Hugo Roelandt and group', qui a été utilisé pendant quelques années pour les œuvres collectives développées sous l'inspiration et la direction de Roelandt ».
