Lawrence Weiner (°1942, États-Unis, vit à New York) est un artiste véritablement « transatlantique ». Il vit tout un temps à Amsterdam et travaille dans toute l’Europe. Au printemps dernier, il a exposé au M HKA avec Liam Gillick. Contrairement aux poètes visuels, qui partent du langage, Weiner prend la sculpture et la peinture comme point de départ de ses pièces textuelles « tectoniques ». Sa célèbre déclaration d’intention dit : « 1. l’artiste peut concevoir l’oeuvre. 2. l’oeuvre peut être fabriquée. 3. l’oeuvre n’a pas besoin d’être faite. » Les mots de Weiner sont concrets, matériels. Peut-être que sa plus grande contribution à l’esprit « essentiel » est d’avoir transformé la chair en mots.
