In Bretter [Boards] (1980) Hoffmann exposes herself to a body extension of extreme dimensions. She consciously uses the sounds generated by her selected materials to compose the music for her pieces. Both these works have been repeatedly documented on video.
“I sometimes feel drawn to work with objects that do not even exist, and that I myself fabricated. I also always found it interesting how props, whether real or contrived, become part of the body, and that this undergoes transformation – like an extension. The boards that which I strapped to my back in the piece Bretter are not necessarily a foreign element. They could be like a cross, but, depending on the position, also like wings. But this did not have to do with the dramatic aspect of a crucifixion; what interested me were the lines, also and, in the way in which the softness of the body behaves in relation to a rigid material."
