Les Grandes Orgues

Gaston Bertrand

Bertrand (1910-1994) had by the end of the 1940s evolved from animist to near-abstract art, most often referring to architectural settings. Like the case here. The clear elegance and refinement of the division of surface, the equilibrium of the verticals, horizontals and diagonals, and the monumental pivot in miniature, black and red, reveal a great fascination for the symbolic power of the classical architectural order. The title Les Grandes Orgues refers to the sacred nature that art has for the artist, and to music as a related experience.
