"Sculptural expression in the works of Peter Rogiers is not as straightforward as might first seem. It remains the result of a complex, sometimes aloof handling of notions of doubt and powerlessness, with absurd experience bound to mendacious truth, the impenetrability of the skin bound to the imperfection that is inherent in articulation."
Rogiers is perhaps best known for his three-dimensional "homages" to Edgar Degas' ballerinas, of which the M HKA possesses one example: Untitled (Degas Piece) from 1993. The sculpture presents us with an absurd variation on the famous Degas-icon, but then executed in polyester and animal hide. The figure has something quite dynamic and mobile about it. Through his choice of material, but also by grace of the distortion, the sculpture at one and the same time emanates an historical and an ahistorical atmosphere. After concept art, Rogiers again makes sculptures where form and choice of materials are the most central elements, and these show the way towards a recognizable reality.
