This work is part of the action Infiltration Homogen für Konzertflügel, der größte Komponist der Gegenwart ist das Contergankind. Beuys performed it during a Fluxus festival in 1966 at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts. Beuys’ aim with this action was to highlight the pharmaceutical scandal surrounding thalidomide. This drug caused serious birth defects in children whose mother took it during pregnancy. The felt cover silences the grand piano, indicating the potential dangers should we remain silent.
