The multiple Ja, Ja, Ja, Ja, Nee, Nee, Nee, Nee results from the Fluxus performance of the same name by Joseph Beuys, Henning Christiansen and Johannes Stüttgen at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts in 1968. During the action, the three performers uttered the phrase “Ja Ja Ja Ja, Nee Nee Nee Nee” for an hour with varying speed and intonation. The text is an ironic reference to typical conversations between ‘gossiping’ old ladies in the streets of Cleves. The work uses the ‘nee’ of Dutch, instead of the ‘nein’ of standard German.
