Shutov’s practice as an artist extended into VJing at raves and clubs, particularly at the club Ptuch in Moscow. The artist recorded these hours-long VJ sets, titling them after the names he gave to each set, such as for example Ravelution. The videos use the image mixing technologies that became common in the early 1990s, collaging together different clips and colourful graphic effects to rather psychedelic effect. The vivid aesthetics of rave in the early 1990s echoed the sense of optimism for young people in Russia in the ensuing decade after the arrival of democracy.
