Union Rave, 1995, was the first of numerous images Gursky took of rave parties in Germany during the 1990s. Using the artist’s typical high vantage point, the image is composed entirely of a mass of people at a large rave. The Union Rave is a large-scale rave which, like Berlin’s Love Parade, began in the early 1990s and takes place annually in Düsseldorf. Gursky’s image portrays the dynamic of the crowd as a collective body engaged with the energy of the durational music event.
