WOMAN AT CENTRE OF POLISH STRIKE
51 year old Anna Walentinowicz is the person at the centre of the Polish shipyards strike. For many years she has worked for workers rights with ceaseless courage and resolve, so it was hardly surprising that when she was fired from the shipyard last week her fellow workers rose in revolt and began the occupation. She claims to be no more than an ordinary housewife, but apart from fulfilling her duties as a mother and housewife and skilled manual worker she has been closely involved in the struggle forworkers rights for many years. Twelve years ago she led a fight to root out corruption amongst trade union officials and was one of the leaders of the 1970 strike when the price of meat triggered a revolt. Her central role in the Gdansk protest this time has once again provided a source of inspiration and resolve for her fellow workers.
