Née à Boston, dans le Massachusetts, Dorothy Iannone a d’abord étudié la littérature à l’Université de Boston avant de se tourner vers l’art à la fin des années 1950. Au début des années 1960, elle s’est installée en Europe où elle a rejoint des mouvements artistiques d’avant-garde qui cherchaient à transgresser les frontières de l’art et à remettre en question les normes culturelles conventionnelles. Sa pratique diversifiée englobe des tableaux, des livres d’artistes, des installations vidéo, des sculptures et des œuvres sonores. Tout au long de sa carrière, l’art de Iannone a gardé un caractère profondément autobiographique, reflétant ses expériences et ses relations. Son œuvre comporte souvent des représentations vibrantes, colorées et explicites de la sexualité et du corps humain, explorant les thèmes de l’amour, de l’extase et de la poursuite de la liberté individuelle.
