Yang Fudong

° 1971

Lives in Shanghai (CN), born in Beijing (CN).

Yang Fudong [°1971, Beijing] is one of the most important contemporary Chinese artists. At the end of the 1990s, after training as a painter, he opted for the media of film and video. In addition to various [solo] exhibitions, Fudong took part twice in the Venice Biennial [in 2003 and 2007], where among others his most ambitious work Seven Intellectuals in Bamboo Forest was exhibited. Typical of Fudong’s work is an intangible ambiguity and mystification. His works investigate the structure and formation of identity through myth, personal memory and lived experience. It evokes an existential experience without being conclusive.

About M HKA / Mission Statement

The M HKA is a museum for contemporary art, film and visual culture in its widest sense. It is an open place of encounter for art, artists and the public. The M HKA aspires to play a leading role in Flanders and to extend its international profile by building upon Antwerp's avant-garde tradition. The M HKA bridges the relationship between artistic questions and wider societal issues, between the international and the regional, artists and public, tradition and innovation, reflection and presentation. Central here is the museum's collection with its ongoing acquisitions, as well as related areas of management and research.
