Vladislav (Vlad) Mamyshev-Monroe
1969 - 2013
Born in Leningrad (RU), died in Bali (ID).
The performative work of Vlad Monroe touches upon the blurred boundaries between reenactment, portraiture and celebrity culture: in his photographs and videos, Monroe acts out today’s celebrities as yesterday’s great historical figures and vice versa. Monroe owes his artistic nickname to his appearances at artistic gatherings in the art scene of St. Petersburg in de 1990s, dressed like Marilyn Monroe. In Monroe's world, identity is unstable, fluctuating, and replacable. By the means of his transformations, Monroe challenges the values of celebrity culture and comments on the influence of celebrities on the identity of the individual.
