Jules Schmalzigaug
1882 - 1917
Born in Antwerp (Belgium), died in Netherlands.
Jules Schmalzigaug ranks as the sole Belgian futurist. After seeing the futurist exhibition at Bernheim-Jeune in Paris in 1912, he travels to take up residence in Venice. He distances himself from his academic training, and becomes strongly attracted to the dynamism and light found in futurist works. In 1914 he exhibits paintings at the ‘Esposizione libera futurista internazionale’ in Rome. With the outbreak of war he moves to the Netherlands together with his parents. He develops his theory of colour, termed ‘panchromy’, where emphasis is placed on the simultaneous contrasts between ‘colour-light’ and ‘colour-muffled’. In this regard he also draws the distinction between pure narrative colour and colour that evokes a state of mind.
